About
Buttervogel Keramik is a ceramics studio nestled in the Tyrolean Alps of Austria. Each piece is hand-thrown and finished with signature matte glazes inspired by the surrounding mountain landscape — soft stone greys, lichen greens and dawn pinks. The name 'Buttervogel' (butterfly) reflects the delicate, organic quality that defines every cup, bowl and vase leaving the studio.
Company story
The studio was founded by a ceramic artist who left a career in graphic design to study traditional pottery techniques in Japan and Austria. After an apprenticeship at a Tyrolean stoneware workshop, she opened her own kiln in a converted Alpine hay barn. Buttervogel Keramik has since grown into a sought-after label, stocked in design shops across Austria and southern Germany. Despite growing demand, production remains deliberately small-scale: every piece is thrown, trimmed, bisque-fired, glazed and glaze-fired by hand. The studio hosts seasonal open-kiln events where visitors can watch the firing process and purchase one-of-a-kind pieces fresh from the kiln.
